UC Irvine Beats No. 1 UCLA in Water Polo

Junior Jeff Powers scored two fourth-quarter goals as third-ranked UC Irvine defeated No. 1 UCLA, 9-8, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo game Sunday at UCLA.
The victory ended the Bruins’ 14-game winning streak and moved the Anteaters (18-5, 7-1) into a first-place tie with UCLA (17-3, 7-1).
Powers, who finished with five goals, broke a 7-7 tie with 4:02 to play. He then scored on a penalty shot with 18 seconds remaining to increase the lead to 9-7. UCLA’s Matt Flesher scored an extra-man goal with 11 seconds left.
Goalie Dan Hipp had 10 saves for Irvine.
The Anteaters end the regular season with a nonconference game at UC Santa Barbara Saturday.
In the ITA Southern California women’s tennis regional championships:
Peterson earns upset--Jewel Peterson of USC, ranked 26th nationally and seeded third, upset the country’s third-ranked player, Sara Walker of UCLA, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, to advance to today’s final at the UC Irvine Tennis Stadium.
Peterson will play Arizona’s Michelle Gough, who beat UNLV’s Agnieszka Abram, 6-0, 7-6.
