VILLA PARK

A group of 100-year-old trees will be removed from the Villa Park Elementary School campus over Thanksgiving weekend, Orange Unified School District officials said.

The nine California pepper trees are rotted and unstable, and could pose a danger to students, officials said.

About six healthy trees will remain on the campus.

“It’s sad, certainly, because [the trees] are part of historic Villa Park,” said Paul Reed, assistant superintendent of facilities, operations and planning.

“But on the other hand, if history is dangerous, you have to tend to it,” he said.

The district plans to plant one new California pepper tree at the school and create a monument to the remaining trees.
