* Emma Varble Osborn; Longtime Simi Resident

Emma “Sis” Varble Osborn, a catering business owner, died Wednesday of congestive heart failure in Ventura. She was 93.

She was born March 17, 1907, in Simi Valley and was the granddaughter of Simi Valley pioneer S. M. W. Easley, who was the first county clerk and who started the first Simi Valley school.

During World War II, she and her husband, Truman Varble, operated a restaurant in Santa Susana, which was popular with soldiers stationed at a nearby Army base.

For many years after closing the restaurant, she continued cooking for the Lions Club, Women’s Club and Chamber of Commerce and catered local parties.

Daughter June Greathouse of Oxnard said Osborn was known by family, friends and customers as “Sis.” She was active in Simi Valley functions and lent a helping hand whenever needed. Her mother also loved gardening, Greathouse said.

Osborn lived in Simi Valley all but six years of her life. In 1993, she retired to the Ventura TowneHouse.

In addition to Greathouse, she is survived by daughters Lorraine Tucker of Santa Barbara and Linda Claire of Irvine; sons John Varble of Simi Valley, Bill Varble of Moorpark and Jim Varble of Camarillo; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Monday at Simi Valley Methodist Church.

Private burial services will be held separately.
