A search dog trained to sniff out human remains showed “interest” in an area of heavily wooded parkland Friday in Rowland Heights while looking for the body of the wife of Los Lobos singer-guitarist Cesar Rosas, sheriff’s deputies said.

The county coroner’s office will further investigate the area, located near the equestrian center of Schabarum Regional Park, this morning, officials said.

The search started after Gabriel Gomez was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without parole for the abduction and murder of Sandra Rosas--his half sister. Gomez told police and reporters that he could lead them to Rosas’ remains.

Police escorted him to the site, not far from Rosas’ home, on Thursday evening, but no remains were found. Authorities returned Friday with the search dog.

Rosas disappeared Oct. 23, 1999. Prosecutors told jurors that Gomez killed his half sister out of jealousy of her family’s fame and wealth. A jury took less than two hours to convict Gomez of first-degree murder.
