*** Various artists, “Strait Up,” Immortal/Virgin. With such peers as Korn, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot all reaching mainstream success, the brash thrash of the Santa Barbara band Snot would have almost certainly ridden the same sonic wave to fame.

The group created a buzz with its bawdy performances on the Ozzfest tour and with its Geffen debut album “Get Some” in 1997, but singer Lynn Strait died in a car accident before they could ever realize that potential. “Strait Up,” a tribute to the ferocious frontman, attempts to capture his free yet intense spirit, melding music from the surviving Snot members Mikey Doling and John Fahnestock with vocals and lyrics from Korn’s Jonathan Davis, Bizkit’s Fred Durst and Slipknot’s Corey, as well as Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath, Incubus’ Brandon Boyd and Coal Chamber’s Dez Fafara, to name a few.

It’s a stellar lineup, and it makes for a diverse collection of ear-lashings, with cuts by Davis, Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust and M.C.U.D. of (Hed)pe best mirroring the Snot recipe of driving aggro-grooves.

Celebrating and mourning Strait’s style is the common thread here, and without it this could be just another noisy compilation filled with big voices and even bigger egos. But the reverence these artists had for Strait almost burns through the disc, making it an aptly potent memorial to the punky powerhouse.
