Stone Creek Elementary School first-grader Elizabeth Lehrer and Turtle Rock Elementary School sixth-grader Sherry Huang are two of 15 finalists who will compete today for a $1,000 scholarship in an essay contest sponsored by Mimi’s Cafe.

The 15 children were picked from more than 3,500 young contestants in Southern California who wrote about what they have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving holiday.

Elizabeth wrote that she is thankful for “my Grandma’s hugs and my Grandpa’s jokes.” Sherry was thankful for the members of her family, who stick together “like peanut butter and jelly.”
