Murray to Have Surgery Today

Share

Almost a week after being twisted down onto Staples Center ice, winger Glen Murray will undergo arthroscopic surgery today on his right knee.

The MRI Monday on Murray, who went down when he tangled with the stick of Colorado’s Martin Skoula, revealed a torn quadriceps muscle slightly above the knee, but the operation today is to remove some torn cartilage in the knee and give doctors a look inside the joint.

Murray will be out “indefinitely,” after scoring seven goals and adding seven assists in 21 games. Murray is also a plus-nine on the plus/minus scale.

His spot in the lineup was filled by Jason Blake for Thursday’s game against New Jersey, and Murray’s spot on the roster went to Brad Chartrand, called up from Lowell of the AHL.

Chartrand was scratched Thursday.

Goalie Jamie Storr figures to play Saturday in Pittsburgh, Sunday in Boston and Tuesday in New York against the Rangers, so there was talk Thursday night of pulling him when it became clear the Kings weren’t going to come back against New Jersey, and just as clear that it wasn’t his night.

Backup Travis Scott has never played in an NHL game, and it seemed an ideal time for his baptism.

Except to Coach Andy Murray.

And to Storr.

“I felt at that point [after being behind, 4-1, in the second period], we weren’t going to come back,” Murray said. “And Jamie is part of this team.”

Therefore, he is part of a team that gave up six goals.

“I never want to come out,” said Storr. “I don’t care if it’s 10-1, or if I face 20 shots in the third period. I’m responsible, and I want that responsibility.”

There was a reunion of sorts in the New Jersey end of the ice Thursday night when Stu Grimson and Jim McKenzie squared off at 19:22 of the second period.

In another incarnation, they shared enforcer duty for the Mighty Ducks and were close off-ice friends.

After a bit of dancing Thursday, both left the ice with five-minute fighting penalties meted out though neither landed a punch.
