Riverside Steps Up With Victory

After starting the season with three losses, UC Riverside won its first game Saturday night, defeating Cal State Fullerton, 59-52, in a nonconference game before 1,775 at the Riverside Rec Center.

Riverside (1-3), playing a Division I schedule for the first time, overcame a 24-point effort by Fullerton guard Kevin Richardson for the victory.

Mark Miller scored 17 points and Viliamu Morton and Kevin Butler each had 10 for Riverside, which will move into the Big West Conference next season.

Fullerton (0-2) was playing without two of its top players, Ike Harmon and Brandon Campbell. Harmon is suspended indefinitely, and Campbell is sidelined for at least three more weeks because of a sprained knee ligament.

Richardson made nine of 18 shots, including three of five three-point attempts.

Riverside shot 38.6% to 40.9% for Fullerton, but the Highlanders made 20 of 28 free throws to 11 of 16 for Fullerton.

Riverside had a 37-23 rebounding advantage.
