Getting the Drop on Bags, Boarding Passes

TIMES STAFF AND WIRES

Jet travel saves time, no doubt about that. But the time you save often is eaten up by checking luggage and getting a boarding pass and seat assignment.

If you’re in Las Vegas, you may be able to reclaim some of those wasted moments. A company called Certified Airline Passenger Services, or CAPS, offers baggage check-in and boarding pass/seat assignment service at 11 hotels (you do not have to be a hotel guest to use the service) and hopes to add more hotels within a few months.

Among CAPS’ airline clients thus far are Southwest, America West and Delta.

For $6 per person, CAPS checks in your bags at a participating hotel between 12 and two hours before your flight. All you have to do is get to the airport, pass through security and board the plane.

Beginning Monday, CAPS is scheduled to extend the service to Alamo car rental customers in Las Vegas. The company hopes to add Alamo in Los Angeles by Christmas and other venues after that, said Jerome Snyder, chairman of CAPS.

The concept has been in development for 3 1/2 years, Snyder said, as CAPS worked with the Federal Aviation Administration to address security concerns.
