Fall Fund-Raisers Benefit a Bevy of Charitable Groups

Forty foster children from Children’s Institute International were included at the benefit performance of “The Lion King” at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood on Oct. 28, sponsored by CHIPS (Colleague Helpers in Philanthropic Service), which raised $50,000 for programs at the institute. . . .

Catholics in Media Associates held its eighth annual Mass and Awards Luncheon on Oct. 29 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, with Cardinal Roger Mahony presiding. Recipients of this year’s awards were the MGM film “Return to Me,” the NBC Television series “The West Wing” and Shelley Fabares and her husband, Mike Farrell, for their community volunteerism. . . .

Mahony sends word that the 12th annual Cardinal’s Awards and Recognition Dinner set for Feb. 3 will honor actor Joseph Campanella of St. Charles Borromeo Church, North Hollywood; community volunteer Iva Carrico of Incarnation Church, Glendale; Brother Patrick Corr of St. John of God Retirement and Care Center, Los Angeles; former Times-Mirror Chairman Robert J. Erburu of Good Shepherd Church, Beverly Hills; and philanthropist Margaret F. Jagels of St. Philip the Apostle Church, Pasadena. Proceeds from the black-tie event, to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, will fund the expansion of St. Odilia school in South-Central Los Angeles. . . .

Shelly Fabares, the national spokeswoman for Alzheimer’s disease, headlined the benefit presented by the Alzheimer’s Assn.of Los Angeles on Oct. 20. Sarah Randolph and Maureen Thomas, who co-chaired, report that the casino-themed event held at Pasadena’s Brookside Golf Club raised $13,000. . . .

Members of the Zonta Club of Pasadena honored Andrea Van de Kamp, chairman of the Board of Governors of the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County, at their fourth annual Woman of Achievement award luncheon. The event, held Oct. 20 at Pasadena’s Doubletree Hotel, raised $25,000 for the club’s philanthropic projects. . . .

Maestro Jorge Mester, music director of the Pasadena Symphony, raised the baton on the orchestra’s 73rd season in grand style on Oct. 21 with a celebration of children and music at an opening-night dinner followed by a performance by 14-year-old violinist, Mayuko Kamio. The dinner has never been staged as a fund-raiser in the past, but this year, the event netted $15,000, thanks to the generous underwriting of Elaine and Jim Mramor. . . .

The ninth annual 10K Mud Run on Oct. 21 at Lake O’Neill sponsored by Camp Pendleton Armed Services YMCA drew more than 3,000 sloggers and raised more than $50,000 for the YMCA programs at the base. . . .

More than $10,000 was raised when supporters of the USC/Norris Cancer Center gathered to preview the new El Cholo Mexican Cafe in Pasadena on Oct. 23 to celebrate the renewal of the center’s new core grant from the National Cancer Center. . . .

On Oct. 25 and 26, nearly 300 needy youngsters from 19 schools in the Pasadena Unified School District were outfitted with uniforms by Operation School Bell, an ongoing program of the Assistance League of Pasadena. . . .

Robert A. Iger, president and chief executive of the Walt Disney Co., was honored at the annual Stars of Tomorrow gala benefit hosted by the Fulfillment Fund. Held Oct. 6 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the event raised more than $500,000 for scholarships. . . .

Los Angeles attorney David W. Fleming received the Nelle Reagan Award for Distinguished Community Service on Oct. 6 at the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center Foundation’s annual dinner at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills. . . .

Architect Brenda Levin, attorney Patricia Kinaga, state Sen. Hilda Solis and Janice Bryant Howroyd, chief executive of Act 1 Personnel Services, were honored by the NOW Legal Defense & Education Fund’s 10th annual Buddy Awards luncheon on Oct. 6 at the Regal Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. . . .

Actress Victoria Principal and her husband, Dr. Harry Glassman, co-founders of Project Face Forward, received the Community Service Award from the Good Shepherd Guild and Advisory Board at the third annual Harvest Ball, “Fiesta,” held at the Regal Biltmore Hotel on Oct. 7. The event raised more than $40,000 for the Good Shepherd Shelter for battered women and their children. Project Face Forward is a group of 12 plastic surgeons who offer their services in collaboration with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to repair injuries to victims of domestic abuse. . . .

“The Voices of Our Children,” an evening of readings by celebrities, the annual fund-raiser held Oct. 7 at the Beverly Hills Women’s Club for Penny Lane, the National Foundation for the Treatment of the Emotionally Handicapped, raised $15,000. . . .

The Providence St. Joseph Foundation celebrated the completion of its $23.6-million fund-raising campaign at a gala dinner-dance at Universal Studios on Oct. 7. The funds are earmarked for a new Northeast Building at the Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. . . .

The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising celebrated the opening of its first modern and contemporary art exhibition, paintings and sculpture from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, with a gala benefit on Oct. 7 for the Venice Family Clinic, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The exhibition remains open to the public through Dec. 14 at the FIDM gallery. . . .

The Downtown Women’s Center Celebrates Home and Heart, held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Grand Hall on Oct. 2, honored restoration architect Brenda Levin and Los Angeles urban developer Wayne Ratkovich for their contributions to the homeless women in the downtown area. The center’s founding board chairman, Bettina Chandler, presented the awards at the event, which raised $139,000 for the women.
