Agency Can Help Parents of Disabled

Parents of disabled children and youth who are seeking information on appropriate public education for their children can contact Ventura County’s Special Education Local Plan Area.

The agency’s executive director, Bernard Korenstein, points out that parents of children with a disability or handicap that requires special education and/or special services have the right to refer their child to their school district of residence for a free evaluation, whether their child is enrolled in a public or private school.

They may also request a free copy of the brochure “Are You Concerned About Your Child?” which explains procedures and their rights as parents of a disabled child. The brochure is available in English and Spanish.

For families with children already in the special education system, the special ed agency makes available, at no cost to families, a booklet called “A Parent Guide to Special Education.” The booklet is available in English and Spanish.

For more information, parents may call their school district’s special education department or the agency at 383-1919.
