MetroStars Tie Series With 2-0 Win Over Fire

Mark Chung and Adolfo Valencia scored goals Saturday as the New York-New Jersey MetroStars evened their Major League Soccer semifinal series against the Chicago Fire with a 2-0 victory.

The series is tied at 1-1 and three points each, with the deciding game to be played Friday at Chicago.

The MetroStars came out determined, outshooting the Fire, 8-4, in the first half while committing 13 fouls to the Fire’s nine. Referee Ricardo Valenzuela tried to keep control of the physical match, issuing five yellow cards in the first half, three to the MetroStars.

The home team’s determination paid dividends in the 40th minute when it took a 1-0 lead on Chung’s unassisted goal.
