1st QUARTER

Arizona State 14, UCLA 0--Richard Williams, two-yard pass from Ryan Kealy at 6:09. PAT--Mike Barth (kick).

TURNING POINT: Kealy saved Arizona State’s first touchdown drive with a 20-yard pass completion to Justin Taplin on a third-and-15 from the ASU 41. Kealy made the completion while being tackled by Bruins linebacker Robert Thomas. Two plays later, Mike Williams burst through the Bruins defense for his first touchdown.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: UCLA had two promising drives snuffed out by fumbles. UCLA now has 12 fumbles on the season, and has lost eight of them.

STAT WATCH: Arizona State outgained UCLA, 149-68, in total yardage, Both teams had five first downs. Mike Williams rushed for 47 yards on four carries and scored his second touchdown this season. DeShaun Foster was the Bruins’ leading rusher with 29 yards on eight carries.

TURNING POINT: With less than four minutes to play in the half, Jermaine Lewis, who came into replace the injured Foster, broke off a 32-yard run before getting hauled down at the ASU 27. Lewis came out for a breather, was replaced by Harris, and Harris scored on the next play. It was his first collegiate touchdown on his second collegiate carry.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: UCLA tried to catch ASU by surprise with a fake punt play. But punter Nate Fikse’s pass attempt was well overthrown.

STAT WATCH: Mike Williams increased his rushing total to 95 yards, which included a 40-yard romp. ASU held a halftime total yardage edge of 278-217, although the Bruins ran 41 plays to 35 by the Sun Devils. UCLA also fumbled a third time, and lost the ball a third time. Cory Paus passed for 103 yards, completing nine of 16 attempts with one interception. He was sacked twice. Kealy threw for 199 yards, completing 13 of 22 attempts. He was also sacked twice.

3rd QUARTER

TURNING POINT: Lewis’ run was the Bruins’ first play from scrimmage in the second half, and gave the Bruins the spark they needed. UCLA exploded for 21 unanswered points to take its first lead. After Arizona State tied the game on Goodman’s 60-yard touchdown pass, Mitchell untied the game with his 80-yard reception for his second touchdown in the quarter.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Lewis’s touchdown run was the longest of his UCLA career. His previous long run was 33 yards. He finished the game with 104 yards rushing, nine yards shy of the career high he established against Texas in 1998.

STAT WATCH: The Bruins went ahead in total yardage 411-395. Paus threw for 122 yards in the quarter.

4th QUARTER

Arizona State 31

THE SCORING: UCLA 35, Arizona State 31--Barth, 49-yard field goal at 14:05.

UCLA 38, Arizona State 31--Griffith, 46-yard field goal at 7:02.

TURNING POINT: Audie Attar knocking down Goodman’s final pass of the game at the UCLA 2 to preserve the win.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Richard Williams dropped a 28-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter that would have tied the score. Instead, the Sun Devils had to settle for a field goal.

STAT WATCH: UCLA, which totaled 500 yards, had two 100-yard rushers and two 100-yard receivers in the same game for the first time since 1996. For the game, the two teams combined for 963 yards.
