Jurist Disqualifies Self in Ex-Judge’s Case

Share

A federal judge disqualified herself Monday from presiding at a hearing for retired Pomona Superior Court Judge George W. Trammell III, who has agreed to plead guilty to charges of abusing his judicial authority.

U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Morrow said she had a potential conflict because her former law partners represented Trammell at one time.

Another judge will be selected at random to take Trammell’s plea and sentence him.

The case against Trammell grew out of a sexual relationship he had with a woman while her husband was awaiting sentencing in his court on kidnapping and other charges.

In a signed deal with federal prosecutors, Trammell, 64, admitted having sex with the woman and concealing the fact. He agreed to plead guilty to two felony counts.

Trammell, who lives in Florida, retired in 1997 when his conduct came under investigation.
