Elizabeth Johns; Retired Preschool Teacher

Elizabeth Ruth Duncan Johns, a retired preschool teacher, died Thursday at her home in Port Hueneme after a lengthy illness. She was 88.

She was born on Aug. 16, 1912, in St. Paul, Minn., to Linda Tricknor and James Duncan.

Since 1957, she lived in Port Hueneme where she was a preschool teacher and a director at Happy Day Nursery School in Oxnard.

After retiring, Johns taught for a short time at Westminster Presbyterian Day Care and for several years she continued teaching and caring for children in her own home.

Johns was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Port Hueneme.

She is survived by daughters Linda Richardson of Port Hueneme and Betty Jean Ickes of Corona; son George Hawkins of Dixon, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Johns was preceded in death by her husband, Robert.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Payton Mortuary chapel in Oxnard. Funeral services are noon Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tim Fearer officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Payton Mortuary in Oxnard.
