The Planning Commission will meet tonight to consider a request to build a 61-foot communications antenna--disguised as a pine tree--on Irvine Center Drive.

Pacific Bell Wireless also plans to build base transceiver stations at its existing switching facility at 4800 Irvine Center Drive.

Nearby residents and businesses have written letters in support of the project. But Bill Matthews, who lives directly behind the site, expressed some concern.

“We do not relish the idea of looking out our back windows and staring at this tower, no matter how disguised it might be,” he wrote. He also questioned the potential dangers of having microwave emissions transmitted from the tower.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:30 in the council chamber at City Hall, One Civic Center Plaza.
