The FBI warned the public Friday about a gun-wielding doctor who is on the lam and suspected of defrauding the federal government of $4 million in medical insurance payments.

Dr. Stanley Furmanski was indicted nine days ago on 13 counts of mail fraud in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

When FBI agents attempted to arrest Furmanski a day later in West Los Angeles, he tried to run one agent over with his car before driving down a one-way street the wrong way, FBI spokeswoman Laura Bosley said.

FBI agents, “concerned for the public’s safety,” ended the pursuit and Furmanski got away, Bosley said.

Furmanski is accused of engaging in a long-running fraud scheme since the mid-1980s, by claiming he could not work due to a medical condition.

Furmanski, a “diagnostic neuro-radiologist,” filed long-term disability income insurance claims between 1986 and 1992, contending he suffered from systemic sclerosis, the FBI said.

The claims resulted in Furmanski receiving nearly $70,000 per month from the various claims, Bosley said.

To date, the FBI estimates that Bosley has received more than $4 million in “fraudulent insurance benefits.”

FBI agents have seized a $150,000 Cessna airplane owned by Furmanski, and $250,000 in cash and “negotiable instruments” from his Los Angeles home, which the bureau has linked to his fraudulent profits.

Several bank accounts belonging to Furmanski have been frozen, and forfeiture proceedings have been initiated.

Bosley said the FBI considers Furmanski armed and dangerous, and says he poses a risk to law enforcement and the public. He has five weapons registered in his name, Bosley said, adding that the FBI has reason to believe he has an UZI assault firearm with him.

Furmanski is described as a white male, 54 years old, 6 feet 2 inches tall and 185 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. He may be driving a white 1996 Jeep Cherokee with the California license plate number 3SSK595, or a white Ford Explorer.

The FBI asked anyone with information about Furmanski to call (310) 477-6565.
