*** ORGY “Vapor Transmissions” Elementree/Reprise

Their androgynous good looks may be what got Orgy lots of exposure on MTV and helped make the dark rendition of New Order’s “Blue Monday” such a hit, but the L.A. cyber-rockers have a lot more to offer than new-romantic poses and robotic updates of old favorites. They proved that with their performances on Korn’s Family Values Tour and with some inspired, synth-driven metallic formulas on their debut album, “Candyass.” Unfortunately, only “Blue Monday” got any real attention.

“Vapor Transmissions” advances their mad doctor’s sonic experiments and takes them to a vivid new universe. And while the futuristic beats, mechanical guitar rhythms, Gothic drones and Jay Gordon’s angry-android-meets-Ziggy-Stardust vocals suggest a land far, far, away, their lyrics contemplate mostly earthly issues such as love and loss (“Eva”), isolation from the status quo (“Suckerface”) and Big Brother’s growing presence (“Opticon” and “Eyes”).

Orgy isn’t really taking us anywhere Gary Numan, Trent Reznor and even Powerman 5000 haven’t already, but its cosmic journey has a sexy sci-fi punch that, right now anyway, is completely its own--at least until Marilyn Manson decides to go techno.
