Fetters Close to a New Contract

Pitcher Mike Fetters, a key member of the Dodger bullpen, is close to agreeing to a multiyear contract with the club, baseball sources said Saturday.

The right-hander, who can become a free agent after the World Series, is expected to sign a two-year deal with an option, guaranteeing him about $4.3 million. Fetters made $550,000 plus performance incentives last season.

Chairman Bob Daly and General Manager Kevin Malone began negotiating with Fetters’ agent, Danny Horwits, during the final week of the regular season.

Malone and Horwits have already completed the contract’s major points, and are awaiting Daly’s return from New York to finalize the deal. The Dodgers do not comment on negotiations.

Contacted at home, Horwits declined comment on contract terms, but confirmed an announcement could be made soon.

“It’s no secret that Mike has expressed his desire to remain a Dodger,” Horwits said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to get it done.”

Fetters, who made the club as a non-roster player, was 6-2 with a 3.24 earned-run average and five saves in 51 appearances.

He shared setup duties with Terry Adams and closed when Jeff Shaw was ineffective and injured.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres were expected to pursue Fetters.
