Storm May Bring Snow to Mountains

The storm that was expected to move into the Southland this morning is bringing the possibility of an early autumn snowfall for the mountains.

Light snow could fall in the mountains above 7,000 feet as early as tonight, National Weather Service meteorologist Ray Tanabe said. Snow levels could fall to 5,500 feet by Wednesday night.

The weather service predicted a 60% chance of rain this morning for Los Angeles County’s coast and valleys. Evening showers and a thunderstorm also are likely, although total rainfall is expected to be less than half an inch.

On Wednesday, the chance of rain is slightly lower, although conditions should be cloudy and cool.

In the Sierra, a winter storm warning was issued Monday night. Officials said chain requirements were expected to be issued by morning for cars traveling over mountain roads between California and Nevada.

Up to six inches of snow was forecast for Lake Tahoe.
