Brind’Amour, Battaglia Lead Hurricanes Over Stars

Rod Brind’Amour and Bates Battaglia scored four minutes apart in the Carolina Panthers’ three-goal second period as the Hurricanes defeated the Dallas Stars, 5-2, Tuesday night at Raleigh, N.C.

Sandis Ozolinsh added a short-handed goal late in the second as Carolina defeated goalie Marty Turco, who was making his NHL debut, as the Stars rested Ed Belfour.

The defending Western Conference champions are off to a 1-2-1 start, having scored only eight goals.

“I think they are a little bit tired,” said Jeff O’Neill, who scored Carolina’s first goal. “Those guys are champions over there, but we kind of jumped on them. The kid in net got hung out to dry a little bit. But they’ve won enough times so tough for them.”

Colorado 3, Calgary 1--Patrick Roy made 29 saves and moved closer to Terry Sawchuk’s record for victories as the Avalanche won at Calgary, Canada.

After starting the season with a pair of ties, Roy earned his 445th victory to move within two victories of tying Sawchuk’s NHL record. Roy was 50 seconds away from his 49th shutout when Dwayne Hay’s shot from the left wing trickled between his pads.

Montreal 5, Edmonton 2--Saku Koivu and Patrice Brisebois scored power-play goals in the second period and Benoit Brunet scored twice to lead the Canadiens over the Oilers in the Canadiens’ 91st home opener.

Craig Darby also scored for the Canadiens, who were outscored, 10-4, in losing their first two games.

Left wing John LeClair of the Philadelphia Flyers is expected to be sidelined at least a week because of a back injury. The back problem flared up during last Saturday night’s 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. Tests were inconclusive. . . . On the day captain Steve Yzerman was activated from the injured list, the Detroit Red Wings said goodbye to feisty 15-year veteran Joe Kocur, who retired. Yzerman, who had been on injured reserve since Oct. 3 because of a sprained knee, is expected to play at home tonight against the Edmonton Oilers. . . . Vezina Trophy winner Olaf Kolzig, who sat out the Washington Capitals’ first two games after knee surgery, has been activated. . . . Carolina Hurricane rookie defenseman Niclas Wallin suffered a broken bone in his right wrist in his NHL debut Saturday and will be sidelined three to four weeks. . . . The Chicago Blackhawks re-signed left wing Kris King. . . . Goalie Garth Snow was recalled by the Pittsburgh Penguins as the backup to Jean-Sebastien Aubin. . . . The Capitals signed General Manager George McPhee and Coach Ron Wilson to long-term contract extensions.
