Wednesday night’s presidential debate ranked as the second-least-watched face-off between White House candidates in recorded history, according to Nielsen Media Research.

An estimated 37.6 million people watched the second matchup between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore. That represented about 9 million fewer viewers than the first debate on Oct. 3, even though the second was shown on more TV stations.

Only the second debate between President Clinton and former Sen. Bob Dole in 1996 drew fewer viewers.
