Gannon, Grbac Square Off

Rich Gannon and Elvis Grbac were teammates in Kansas City in 1998.

Now the two underrated quarterbacks go against each other as the Raiders and Chiefs square off for first place at Arrowhead Stadium.

Grbac ranks fourth in the NFL in passer rating at 95.3, and Gannon, 13th in the rankings (82.8), helps the Raiders with his scrambling as well.

Gannon got the best of the Chiefs last season with a 324-yard passing performance in the Raiders’ overtime victory that kept the Chiefs from going to the playoffs.

Gannon tried to pitch in with his mouth last week against the San Francisco 49ers, arguing with Coach Jon Gruden for another play before the Raiders tried a field goal.

Sebastian Janikowski then missed, but the Raiders went on to win on Gannon’s overtime touchdown pass to Tim Brown.

“I welcome his feedback,” Gruden said. “There’s not a sign on our locker room that says, ‘No Yelling Allowed.’ ”

Denver running back Terrell Davis is confident the foot and ankle injuries that may keep him out the rest of the month don’t mean he won’t fully regain his form after knee surgery.

“When I was at Long Beach State, I had ankle problems and thought I might never play again,” said Davis, the NFL’s most valuable player in 1998.

“It happens. You’re going to have spells in your career when you’re going to get injured.

“I really believe that had this not come directly after my knee injury, then it wouldn’t be a big deal. But the fact that I’ve been out a year and now I have an ankle injury, it’s starting to seem to everyone else that I’m injury-prone and I’m not coming back 100%. That’s just perception.”
