1st Quarter

UCLA 7

California 7

THE SCORING: * California 7, UCLA 0: Igber, 23-yard pass from Boller at 9:26. 65-yard drive, seven plays. Key gain--Boller, 22-yard run on third and nine from UCLA 49. PAT--Jensen (kick).

* California 7, UCLA 7: Fletcher, 15-yard pass from Paus at 11:12. 80-yard drive, seven plays. Key play-- Fletcher 23-yard pass from Paus on third and 11 from UCLA 19. PAT--Griffith (kick).

TURNING POINT: It didn’t seem to matter that California is the lowest-scoring team in the conference because the Bears scored the second time they got their paws on the ball--and it took all of 2 minutes 34 seconds to do it. Meanwhile, California’s defense was busy harassing UCLA quarterback Corey Paus, which is what happens when the running game was as invisible as UCLA’s.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: On one possession, UCLA had a third and one at the Cal 34 and had no gain on a running play by Jermaine Lewis. The Bruins went for it on fourth down and--you guessed it--Drew Bennett lost two yards on a running play. Cal took over and started its scoring drive.

STAT WATCH: UCLA kept its record clean--it still hasn’t scored first in any game this year. . . . How is it going to be for UCLA in the DeShaun Fosterless games? The Bruins had better hope it isn’t like this--10 carries for a net of zero yards. Paus was five of nine for 115 yards passing, but he was under heavy pressure. Cal’s Igber had one reception, but it was a 23-yard touchdown pass from Boller, and he also ran eight times for 15 yards.

2nd Quarter

California 21

UCLA 14

THE SCORING: * California 14, UCLA 7: Igber, 36-yard pass from Boller at 4:51. PAT--Jensen (kick), 36-yard drive, one play.

* California 21, UCLA 7: Asomugha 31-yard interception return at 5:51. PAT-Jensen (kick).

* California 21, UCLA 14: Fletcher four-yard pass from Paus at 14:22, five-yard drive in three plays.

TURNING POINT: Boller fumbled on a quarterback sneak on second and nine at the California two with one minute left in the half. If the Bears had been able to run out the clock, they would have had double their seven-point lead. Instead, the Bruins scored with 38 seconds left and got closer at the half.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Former Cal quarterback and former Minnesota Viking star Joe Kapp spent the first half in the press box and had trouble containing his enthusiasm--he cheered. Kapp knew he had committed a faux pas and kept quiet afterward.

STAT WATCH: Akil Harris took over most of the running duties for the Bruins and carried 10 times for 38 yards. But the Bruins still had big problems running the football--13 carries for 43 yards in the quarter.

3rd Quaarter

California 28

UCLA 14

THE SCORING: * California 28, UCLA 14: Echema one-yard run at 10:12, 70-yard drive in 11 plays. Key gain: Echema eight-yard run on third and one at UCLA 27. PAT--Jensen (kick).

TURNING POINT: The Bruins had the ball three times and got nothing out of those possessions, but the UCLA defense could not get Cal off the field on the Bears’ scoring drive that lasted nearly five minutes.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: As if the UCLA running game wasn’t already bad enough, Lewis injured his left ankle when a Cal player rolled over on it. . . . California was using its sixth different offensive line yet Boller was sacked only once.

STAT WATCH: The Bears held a 127-39 advantage in net rushing yards. . . . Freddie Mitchell had 104 yards on pass receptions and UCLA had 244 yards total offense.

4th Quarter

UCLA 28

California 28

THE SCORING: * California 28, UCLA 21: Harris 20-yard pass from Paus at 6:17. 39-yard drive in five plays after Anderson interception of Boller pass at California 39. Key gain: Dubravac eight-yard pass from Paus on fourth and four to California 25. PAT--Griffith (kick).

* California 28, UCLA 28: Mitchell 35-yard pass from Paus at 8:01, 41-yard drive in three plays after White recovered Echema fumble. PAT--Griffith (kick).

TURNING POINT: Count two of them, actually, the two Cal turnovers that led directly to 14 UCLA points. Touchdown drives of 39 yards and 41 yards? That was UCLA’s good fortune.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: The Bears squandered a chance to put the game away with their two turnovers, but they hung tough. Boller stayed poised and kept the pressure on.

STAT WATCH: At the end of regulation, UCLA had rushed 36 times for 34 yards. . . . Mitchell had 158 yards from his seven pass receptions, which is better than his average per game of 113.8--No. 3 in the NCAA. Paus was 18 of 33 for 298 yards and his first four-touchdown game. He also had two interceptions.
