Treger to Conduct Season’s Youth Symphony Concerts

Music Director Alexander Treger will conduct all seven concerts of the American Youth Symphony in the 2000-01 season, beginning Sunday at 8 p.m. in Royce Hall at UCLA.

The opening concert will feature 12-year-old violinist Ryu Goto in his West Coast debut; he is the younger brother of another violinist, the celebrated Midori. Goto will play the Dvorak Concerto on a program also offering Steven Stucky’s “Ancora” and the “Symphonie Fantastique” by Berlioz.

Acclaimed Russian pianist Mark Zeltser returns to play Rachmaninoff’s Third Concerto with the youth orchestra Nov. 19.

In the Dec. 10 concert, Treger conducts Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante for oboe, bassoon, violin, cello and orchestra, and pieces by Johann Strauss.

Kirill Gliadkovsky is the piano soloist at the Feb. 4 event, playing Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

AYS’ annual gala benefit is March 11. The guest soloist is violinist Julian Rachlin, in a Tchaikovsky program.

On April 8, the orchestra will perform music by Rossini, Bruch, Paganini and Bartok. The final concert of the season, May 13, will feature cellist Yao Zhao in Tchaikovsky’s “Rococo” Variations.

All concerts, except the gala benefit in March, are free.
