Sun Microsystems Inc. is tripling its office space in Irvine to make room for an expanding regional sales force.

The Palo Alto computer products and services company has signed a six-year lease to occupy 44,000 square feet on the top two floors of Opus West Corp.’s Opus Center Irvine at Main Street and MacArthur Boulevard.

Sun expects to move more than 150 employees into the new space in March.

They’re now squeezed into a 15,000-square-foot office.

Terms of the new lease were not disclosed, but its value would be about $10 million at current rates.

Opus Center Irvine is 90% leased with the signing of Sun. The building is the first of three planned towers totaling 930,000 square feet. Construction of the second tower is scheduled to begin in May, with completion in late 2002. No date has been set for construction of the third tower.

Herb Hafter and Mike Gion of Jones Lang LaSalle represented the tenant in lease negotiations, while Al Masters and Dean Chandler of CB Richard Ellis represented Opus West.
