Art

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents its largest exhibition ever: “Made in California: Art, Image and Identity, 1900-2000.” This revisionist view of California’s cultural legacy takes over galleries in three buildings on Wilshire Boulevard. A survey of 20th century art and pop culture, the exhibition features more than 800 works of art in a wide range of media as well as cultural documents such as tourist brochures, rock posters and labor pamphlets.

Singer-songwriter Poe isn’t the only artist in the family--her brother Mark Danielewski has been in the limelight lately for his experimental horror novel “House of Leaves.” Now Poe is about to release “Haunted,” her first album in five years and a companion piece to his book. The siblings will mark the occasion with a joint appearance, she singing and he reading.

Prize-winning Jon Nakamatsu, gold-medal winner of the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, returns this week to play with the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet. Their program includes Beethoven’s Quintet for Piano and Winds, Opus 16, Poulenc’s Sextet for Piano and Winds and music by Mozart, Reicha and Jolivet.

The Pacific Chorale season opens with a performance by the John Alexander Singers and Musica Angelica, conducted by John Alexander, of works by Bach and Handel in Segerstrom Hall. The ensembles will perform Bach’s “Magnificat” and Missa Brevis in G minor, and Handel’s “Laudate pueri.”

Marlon Brando gives two towering performances in Elia Kazan-directed dramas paired at the New Beverly Cinema. In 1954’s “On the Waterfront,” Brando and a fine cast including Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger and Eva Marie Saint act out Budd Schulberg’s account of the tough life around New York City’s harbor unions. “A Streetcar Named Desire,” from 1951, features Brando as Tennessee Williams’ Stanley Kowalski opposite Vivien Leigh’s Blanche DuBois and Kim Hunter as Stella.
