Supreme Court Picks

Share

* It is sad to see Robert Scheer resort to the tired, old scare tactic of telling voters that a vote for Ralph Nader is a vote for a Supreme Court stacked with Scalia-Thomas clones (“Al, You Should Try Taking Credit Where Credit’s Due,” Commentary, Oct. 17). Scheer failed to mention that both justices were confirmed by a Democrat-led Senate. Seven Democratic senators gave Thomas his 52-48 confirmation vote. Senate Democrats confirmed Scalia by a unanimous vote--98-0, with two Republican abstentions.

Unfortunately, the next president, whether it is George W. Gore or Al Bush, will be elected by people who vote their false fear instead of their true conscience. We deserve the president we get.

After perusing Scheer’s column I come away with the opinion that Scheer would likely believe he should have more than one vote, given his adoration for Bill Clinton. However, those who may cast their vote for Bush (the benighted, in his opinion, to be sure) may do so firmly believing Clinton’s Nixonian ways (lying under oath, chief among many) have damaged the country far more than George W. would in the White House or another Clarence Thomas would on the bench.
