Complaints from nearby residents led city officials to move forward this week with a plan to clean up discarded debris, overgrown weeds and an illegal 4-by-12-foot shack discovered on a parcel of land in the Bryant Ranch area near Avenida del Tren.

The City Council voted Tuesday to set a public hearing for Nov. 21 to declare the spot a public nuisance, arrange to have it cleaned up and pass along the costs to the property owners, listed on the deed as YL Brighton Associates, a development firm.

City officials found loose tobacco on the floor of the shack, prompting concern that people may be smoking inside and could ignite the flammable vegetation surrounding the structure. Drainage culverts were also discovered to be obstructed with overgrown vegetation, which could cause problems during heavy rains.

Efforts to reach a representative of the development firm were unsuccessful Thursday.
