*** Tony Iommi, “Iommi,” Divine/Priority.

Share

A revered veteran rock guitarist who’s seen better (or at least bigger) days decides to make a comeback album with the assistance of some current music stars. Sound familiar?

Like Santana’s “Supernatural,” Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi’s solo debut couples his deep, driving riffs and rhythms with vocals by some younger artists who have admired him for decades--from heavy hitters such as Pantera’s Philip Anselmo and Type O Negative’s Peter Steele to more melodic rockers including Billy Corgan and Dave Grohl.

The diverse results may not have the mass-appeal potential of “Supernatural,” but “Iommi” is definitely compelling enough to garner the heavy-metal pioneer some new young fans. Highlights include the soulfully abrasive “Meat” with singer Skin from Skunk Anansie (the only female on the album), Corgan’s dark, Pumpkins-esque “Black Oblivion” and the Sabbath-reminiscent “Who’s Fooling Who,” featuring Iommi’s old bandmate Ozzy Osbourne.
