Auto Mall Donates Funds to Schools

The Thousand Oaks Auto Mall has presented five elementary schools about $10,000 each to support reading programs.

Ten dealerships helped fund the donations.

Last year, the mall began supporting literacy programs at Walnut, Conejo, Park Oaks, Manzanita and Glenwood elementary schools. This year dealerships donated $5 per vehicle sold and gave about $106,000 to the five schools.

The Auto Mall has given the schools nearly $75,000 this year and will provide about $25,000 more by year’s end, said Sara West, a spokeswoman.

The mall selected the schools because they need more help than others in raising outside funds to support programs, said Sheila Carlson, principal at Walnut Elementary.

Schools use funds to purchase books, computer reading programs and computers. Walnut Elementary bought thousands of new books and about 30 computers in the past year thanks to the funding, Carlson said. “It’s helped tremendously,” she said. “They’ve been an outstanding support to our school.”
