I agree that within the context of the interview as published, one might interpret the quotes attributed to Bette Midler about her shift in fund-raising as a bit callous (Letters, Oct. 15).

However, rather than take issue with her over words that were excerpted into an interview, I’m inclined to give the lady a break. Midler has often acknowledged who her friends--and her fans--are. I’m sure her feelings, including her pain at the loss of so many people, are far deeper and more complex than can be expressed in a sound bite.
