Discussion Planned on Hate Crimes
The Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations will discuss hate crimes at a town hall meeting Thursday at Valley College.
The number of hate crimes reported in Los Angeles County and in California is rising, according to the Anti-Defamation League. Through studies and surveys, the organization, along with the National Conference for Community and Justice, has discovered that education and having contact with minorities play key roles in reducing prejudice.
One study, for instance, found that once people get to know others of different races, ethnicities and religions, they appreciate the different groups more.
The commission, however, does not believe that people with less education, wealth or contact with minorities are the only ones responsible for the rise in hate crimes.
The panel discussion will be hosted by the Mid-Valley Community Police Council and the Community Police Advisory Board. It will begin at 7 p.m. at Valley College’s Little Theatre, 5899 Fulton Ave.
