Cooley Wins Another Police Endorsement

Share

District attorney candidate Steve Cooley picked up another law enforcement endorsement Tuesday when COPS, the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs, announced that it had thrown its support behind him.

COPS previously had endorsed incumbent Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti, but withdrew that support in May, saying its members wanted to take another look at the two candidates. The labor organization represents about 3,500 peace officers statewide, including members of several relatively small agencies in Los Angeles County. Among these are the Burbank and Bell Gardens police departments and the Los Angeles Community College District.

The announcement follows a decision by the huge Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing Los Angeles Police Department officers, to switch its support from Garcetti to Cooley.

COPS Executive Director Monty Holden announced his organization’s endorsement at a news conference Tuesday that included representatives of 18 law enforcement organizations backing Cooley.

The Los Angeles County Police Chiefs Assn. has endorsed Garcetti.
