From Times Wire Reports

Former Prime Minister Edward Heath, the longest-serving member in the House of Commons, said he will retire from Parliament after more than half a century. Heath, 84, said in a letter to his constituency in Bexley, southeast of London, that he will not run in the next general election, expected to be called sometime in the spring. Heath served one term as Conservative Party prime minister, from 1970 to 1974. His major achievement was negotiating Britain’s long-resisted entry into the European Community.
