Crowd Favorite Can’t Get Past Hingis

Still no titles for Anna Kournikova, even with a home-court advantage.

Top-ranked Martina Hingis of Switzerland beat Kournikova, her doubles partner, 6-3, 6-1, Sunday to win the Kremlin Cup at Moscow.

Hingis won five consecutive games to close out the first set in 26 minutes and move out to a 3-0 lead against the Russian in the second. After Kournikova took the fourth game of the second set, Hingis lost only one point the rest of the way.

In the men’s final, Olympic champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia beat David Prinosil of Germany, 6-2, 7-5, for his fourth consecutive Kremlin Cup crown.

Thomas Enqvist won his second title of the year, defeating Roger Federer, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-1, to win the Swiss Indoors at Basel.

Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic won her first WTA title with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Miriam Oremans of the Netherlands in the final of the Eurotel Slovak Indoor tournament at Bratislava, Slovakia.

Candace Smith, an ex-girlfriend of Rae Carruth, told police the former Carolina Panther player confided he had seen his pregnant girlfriend shot, left the scene and worried he would be implicated, according to a published report.

Smith told police in June that Carruth so strongly disliked Cherica Adams that he wished for her death, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Smith also said Carruth told her in earlier conversations he should have someone “beat her up or kick her in the stomach and make her have a miscarriage.”

Denver Broncos quarterback Brian Griese was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Griese was stopped by a trooper for speeding while driving northbound on Interstate 25 in south Denver at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Trooper Rob Marone said.

Griese was arrested after failing a Breathalyzer test, and then taken to a detoxification center in Aurora, Marone said.

A trooper stopped Griese for driving 80 mph in a 65 mph zone, Marone said. Marone said Griese’s blood-alcohol content was above the 0.10 legal limit.

Motor racing

David Gilliland won the NASCAR Super Late Model race Saturday at Irwindale Speedway. . . . John Force wrapped up his 10th NHRA funny car title and Angelle Seeling won her first pro stock motorcycle championship in the Matco Tools SuperNationals at Baytown, Texas. Force, who tied Pro Stock driver Bob Glidden for the most championships in the history of the sport, lost to Cruz Pedregon in the final at Houston Raceway Park. Dave Schultz, diagnosed with cancer two months ago, won the Pro Stock Motorcycle final. Cory McClenathan earned the Top Fuel victory and Warren Johnson won the Pro Stock division. . . . Kevin Harvick rallied from a lap down to win the Sam’s Town 250, but Jeff Green, who finished third, gained the Busch Grand National series championship at Memphis, Tenn.

Miscellany

Connecticut basketball senior guard Shea Ralph struggled with anorexia nervosa in high school, which depleted her to the point that she needed help getting out of bed, she told the Hartford Courant. Ralph was selected MVP of last year’s Final Four in which Connecticut won the title.

Powerlifter Gundus Ismailov of Azerbaijan was stripped of his gold medal in the Sydney Paralympics after testing positive for the steroid nandrolone.

Ismailov won the 198-pound competition, lifting 528 pounds to set a world record, which will be nullified.

Elly Rono of Kenya won the Columbus Marathon of Ohio in 2 hours 15 minutes 27 seconds. Marzanna Helbik of Poland won the women’s race in 2:36:28.

Austrian skier Hermann Maier defended his title by winning the opening of the men’s World Cup giant slalom in Soelden, Austria. Maier’s combined time over the two races was 2 minutes 16.89 seconds.

Jens Lehmann won the gold medal in pursuit at the world cycling championships in Manchester, England.
