SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Anaheim police officer Thomas “Kasey” Geary officially returned to duty Friday, seven weeks after he was critically wounded by a gunshot to the face, authorities said.

Juan Carlos Alcaraz, 24, has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer for allegedly shooting Geary during a traffic stop on the Costa Mesa Freeway.

Geary will work out of the Anaheim police station assisting the division commander while he undergoes physical therapy. Geary’s left arm has only about 75% of its previous strength, officials said.

Geary, a Medal of Valor recipient, is expected to return to patrol duty eventually, officials said.

Having Geary back at work is “a good morale boost,” said Sgt. Chuck Knight. “It’s good to see him doing really well, especially for those of us who were on that night.”

Anaheim police are still searching for a female passenger who authorities believe was in the car at the time of the shooting.
