Nebraska Is Untouchable In Win Over San Jose State

As Nebraska’s only experienced quarterback, Eric Crouch was made off-limits to tacklers during fall practice.

It looked like much of the same Saturday in the season opener for the top-ranked Cornhuskers, as Crouch scored three touchdowns and passed for another to lead Nebraska to a 49-13 victory over San Jose State at Lincoln, Neb.

The junior quarterback had only eight carries for 57 yards, but the Spartans couldn’t stop him when the Huskers got close to the end zone. Crouch scored on runs of six, four and nine yards.

Crouch didn’t need to be the leading rusher. Dan Alexander ran for 208 yards and two touchdowns and Correll Buckhalter had 117 yards on 13 carries for the Cornhuskers, who scored on their first four possessions and didn’t punt until the fourth quarter.

No. 8 Kansas State 54, Louisiana Tech 10--Quincy Morgan caught four passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Wildcats past the Bulldogs on a 111-degree day in Manhattan, Kan.

The Wildcats (2-0), who beat Iowa in its season opener, forced five turnovers from the Bulldogs (1-1) and did not have to punt until 1:27 remained in the third quarter.

No. 19 Oklahoma 55, Texas El Paso 14--Josh Heupel threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, and freshman Renaldo Works scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Sooners beat the Miners at Norman, Okla.

Iowa State 25, Ohio 15--Ennis Haywood rushed for 159 yards in his first start, including a 73-yard third-quarter touchdown run that helped the Cyclones win at Ames, Iowa.

Texas Tech 38, Utah State 16--Kliff Kingsbury threw for a school-record 450 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score to lead the Red Raiders at Lubbock, Tex.

Southern Methodist 31, Kansas 17--Josh McCown led the Mustangs to three touchdowns and a field goal on their first four possessions before 32,267 in their new on-campus Gerald J. Ford Stadium at Dallas.

Missouri 50, Western Illinois 20--Kirk Farmer threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Tigers took advantage of Western Illinois’ punting miscues at Columbia, Mo.
