Sophomore quarterback Michael Vick threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others Saturday, leaving countless Akron defenders grasping at air as he led No. 11-ranked Virginia Tech to a 52-23 victory.

Vick, whose spectacular freshman season ended with a gripping performance in the national championship game, ran 16 and 63 yards for touchdowns and had scoring passes of 59 and 34 yards in a season debut that was delayed one week after Virginia Tech’s game against Georgia Tech last Sunday was canceled because of lightning.

In three quarters against Akron, Vick completed seven of 11 passes for 186 yards and rushed eight times for 102 yards.

Said Akron Coach Lee Owens:

“If he’s not the greatest football player in college today, I don’t want to go against the guy who is.”

The Hokies had 549 yards, and the Zips (0-1) had 410 and trailed only 28-17 three minutes before halftime.

Vick, however, completed two short passes before connecting with Emmett Johnson for a 59-yard scoring play with 56 seconds left.
