A motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run, head-on collision in Dana Point on Monday after hitting a sport utility vehicle in the intersection of Doheny Park Road and Victoria Boulevard.

The victim, a 54-year-old San Juan Capistrano resident, was driving a late-model Harley Davidson about 2:15 p.m. when he attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Victoria Boulevard, officials said.

The driver of a Toyota RAV4 was heading in the opposite direction and also attempted a left-hand turn when the accident occurred.

Sheriff’s officials said the driver of the Toyota fled the scene and was arrested a few minutes later after being identified by witnesses.

Kevin Joyce, 60, was booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of felony hit and run and driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, said Lt. Larry Abbott.

The motorcyclist, who worked for the county’s public facilities and resources department, was not identified pending notification of next of kin.

The crash was the second fatal accident involving a motorcyclist over the Labor Day weekend. On Sunday, a Garden Grove man was killed in a head-on collision in south Orange County.
