Feinstein Faces Surgery After Breaking Her Leg

WASHINGTON — California’s Sen. Dianne Feinstein will need to undergo surgery after breaking her leg while vacationing in Colorado over the Labor Day weekend.
Feinstein, 67, who is up for reelection in November, slipped Friday night on the stairs at her home in Aspen and suffered a compound fracture of the left tibia, a spokesman for the senator said Tuesday. She also suffered tendon damage that will require surgery to repair.
The senator, wearing a cast and using crutches, returned to Washington but did not attend the Senate’s session Tuesday. She has discussed the injury with Senate Minority Leader Thomas A. Daschle (D-S.D.) and will schedule the surgery so she can be available for as many crucial votes as possible, her aides said.
“I don’t think it will have any impact on the campaign,” said Feinstein campaign manager Kam Kuwata. “September was always going to be a month where she needed to be in Washington.”
Congress is scheduled to wrap up its work for the year and adjourn by Oct. 6.
