Pettitte Has Edge Against Martinez
Pedro Martinez has finally met his match. His name is Andy Pettitte.
For the second time in three months, Pettitte beat baseball’s earned-run average leader and two-time Cy Young winner in Fenway Park, pitching the New York Yankees to a 5-3 win Saturday over the Boston Red Sox.
Helped by Scott Brosius’ three-run homer in the seventh inning off Martinez, Pettitte (18-7) left after eight innings with a 3-1 lead.
On June 20, Pettitte pitched 7 2/3 innings in a 3-0 win over Boston when Martinez gave up three solo homers.
Cleveland 9, Chicago 3--Roberto Alomar hit three doubles and drove in three runs and Dave Burba gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings in leading the Indians to a win at Cleveland.
Oakland 10, Tampa Bay 0--Tim Hudson gave up two hits in his second shutout of the season and Jason Giambi hit two of the Athletics’ six home runs at Oakland.
Seattle 7, Minnesota 2--All-Star shortstop Alex Rodriguez drove in a run in each of his four plate appearances, finishing three for three with four RBIs in the Mariners’ win at Seattle.
Toronto 6, Detroit 5--Reliever Billy Koch blew David Wells’ bid to become the major leagues’ first 20-game winner, but the Blue Jays won on Brad Fullmer’s run-scoring single in the ninth at Toronto.
Texas 6, Kansas City 5--Gabe Kapler had two hits and two RBIs in a six-run fourth inning that helped the Rangers clinch their first series victory in six weeks at Kansas City, Mo.
