UC Irvine Wins Own Soccer Tournament

Natalie Franklin and Lachelle Manzano each scored goals as UC Irvine defeated Columbia, 2-0, to win the championship of the UC Irvine tournament Sunday.

Franklin, a junior transfer from Cal State Dominguez Hills who was named the tournament’s top offensive player, scored off an assist from Brittny Zimmerman in the 19th minute. Manzano, an Edison High graduate, scored in the 76th minute off an assist from Caroline Kabe.

Senior Allison Merrick had three saves for Irvine (4-1) and was selected as the tournament’s top goalkeeper.

In another tournament game:

Kansas 3, Cal State Fullerton 1--Lindsey Homer scored in the 76th minute to break a 1-1 tie for Kansas (3-3), which finished second in the tournament.

Tennli Ulicny scored the only goal for Fullerton (3-4).

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Chapman 0, Willamette (Ore.) 0 (double overtime)--Despite being outshot, 15-3, Chapman (3-0-1) held on to tie Willamette (3-0-1).

In the UC Irvine men’s soccer invitational:

Cal State Fullerton 4, Buffalo 1--Ray Ramirez and Shaun Higges each scored first-half goals and Brad Dunaway had two assists for Fullerton (4-0).

UC Irvine 3, Missouri Kansas City 1--Senior Eric Monterastelli scored two goals and Scott Bowman had two assists for the Anteaters (4-0).

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Willamette (Ore.) 3, Chapman 2--Scott Tomlins scored in the 77th minute to give Willamette (3-2) the victory. Danny Wittmers and Nick Tolman each scored for Chapman (3-1-1).

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo:

UC Irvine 13, UC Santa Barbara 7--Dan Klatt scored five goals and Jeff Powers added three for Irvine (2-0, 1-0 in conference). Klatt scored two goals in the second quarter for the Anteaters, ranked fifth in the nation.

Paul Rave scored four goals for ninth-ranked Santa Barbara (1-2, 0-1).
