Mayfield’s Offense, Defense, Lift Sonora

David Mayfield ran for 189 yards and three touchdowns--including a six-yarder with nine minutes remaining--to help Sonora defeat Savanna, 27-20, in a nonleague game at La Habra High.

Mayfield followed his six-yard touchdown run with a run for the crucial two-point conversion that put the Raiders seven points ahead.

Then, Mayfield intercepted a pass from Savanna’s Brad Thompson on the Sonora 15 with 2 minutes 24 seconds remaining, stopping the Rebels’ last-ditch effort to win.

Savanna’s defense helped keep the Rebels in the game, stopping four Sonora drives with interceptions.

Savanna defensive back Steve White led the Rebels (0-2) with two interceptions. White’s second interception, which he returned for a 41-yard touchdown, came early in the fourth quarter.

After Thomas Tuvalu caught a pass from Thompson for the two-point conversion to make it 20-19, Savanna had its first lead since early in the second quarter.

But on the next possession, Mayfield carried the Raiders.

Savanna’s kick left the Raiders on their 36, and Mayfield had consecutive runs of 26, one, five, 26 and finally six yards, for the winning touchdown.

“Our defense saved us tonight, it was really close after they had the interception for the TD,” Sonora Coach Mark Takkinen said. “David [Mayfield] did a great job, and so did our offensive line.”

Takkinen added the Raiders (2-0) need to cut down on their mistakes if they want to keep winning.

Savanna defensive lineman Paris Matahumu had one sack, and grabbed the game’s first interception in the first quarter.

Chris Trujilo had four receptions for 32 yards and intercepted a pass in the second quarter for Savanna.
