At Catalina’s he will perform unaccompanied guitar solos that sound like they’re being played by a trio.

6: In 1991, a dozen years after the death of bassist-composer Charles Mingus, the Mingus Big Band was formed. The exciting all-star ensemble (which brings back the spirit of the fiery Mingus) will perform at El Camino College Center for the Arts.

7: Billy Childs Chamber Jazz Sextet, Cal State Northridge Performing Arts Center.

17-22: Alto player Lee Konitz, a major player since the late 1940s, has maintained a modern style while retaining his distinctive cool tone. At the Jazz Bakery, the thoughtful improviser teams up with pianist Alan Broadbent for six nights of duets.

16: A jazz giant of the piano since the late 1960s, Keith Jarrett has successfully battled illness during the last few years to make a comeback. He will perform at Royce Hall with his “standards trio,” which also features bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette.

17-18: Jeannie and Jimmy Cheatham, Orange County Performing Arts Center.

18: Regina Carter, UCLA’s Ostin Hall.

18: Guitarist John McLaughlin has broken new musical ground throughout his career and was one of the pioneers in fusing jazz with Indian music. His virtuosic acoustic guitar will be featured with a new version of Shakti at Royce Hall.

21: Poncho Sanchez, Hollywood Park Casino.

21-26: Pat Martino’s comeback after a brain aneurysm has been inspiring. At the Jazz Bakery, the inventive guitarist will be teamed with the exciting organist Joey DeFrancesco.

21-26: Pianist Eric Reed (best known for his association with Wynton Marsalis) is a versatile player with a sound of his own. He will lead his New York Band at Catalina Bar & Grill. The all-star straight-ahead outfit features trumpeter Nicholas Payton and alto player Donald Harrison.
