Report Says Lamont Will Be Out as Pirate Manager

Pittsburgh Pirate Manager Gene Lamont has been told that he will be out of a job when his contract expires after this season, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Sunday.

Pirate owner Kevin McClatchy has told Lamont that he won’t be rehired as the ballclub’s manager when the season ends, the newspaper said.

“The best way to handle that is to not talk about it now,” Lamont said after Sunday’s 5-3 loss to Houston. “There will be a time to talk about it later.”

McClatchy declined to discuss the issue late Saturday.

“I’m going to tell you the same thing I’ve said all year,” McClatchy said. “I will address this situation at the end of the season.”

Toronto pitcher Chris Carpenter received 18 stitches inside his mouth, but there was no fracture and no eye damage after being hit by a line drive Saturday, a team spokesman said.

Blue Jay Manager Jim Fregosi said Carpenter will be sidelined for 7-10 days.

“I feel real lucky,” Carpenter said.

The San Diego Padres agreed to a five-year, $2.85 million contract with second-round draft pick Xavier Nady.

The deal includes a $1.1 million signing bonus spread over several years, and a four-year major league contract worth a total of $1.75 million, according to Padre General Manager Kevin Towers.

Towers said it was the first time San Diego awarded a major league contract to a draft pick.

Bernie Williams returned to the New York Yankee lineup for the first time in a week because of a sore right rib cage, but still can’t bat left-handed.

“We can’t afford for this to happen again,” Manager Joe Torre said of the injury that has bothered Williams the past month. “We have to be cautious with him.”

Torre did that, removing Williams after five innings in a 15-4 loss to Cleveland.
