Three teens were honored Tuesday for their lifesaving efforts while on a recent Boy Scout outing in Sequoia National Park.
Dallas Fox, Jason Osajima and Russell Peavey, all members of Troop 778, were on the third day of a 10-day hike along the John Muir Trail in early August, when one of their leaders, Bill Kielty, became seriously ill. While another leader stayed on the trail to tend to him, the three boys, who attend Esperanza and Troy high schools, were told to set out at 10:30 p.m. to find help.
They hiked six miles through darkness, where they met other hikers who accompanied Osajima another 12 miles at night to get help.
Mayor Ken Ryan was scheduled to present the boys a city proclamation before Tuesday’s council meeting.
