Weber’s Relief Effort Lifts New Zealand, 6-2
Pitching for the third time in as many days, Gina Weber gave up no hits in two innings of relief today to help New Zealand to a 6-2 victory over Cuba at Blacktown.
Weber entered the game with the score tied, 2-2, after five innings. In the top of the seventh, New Zealand (2-2) scored four runs to break the tie and preserve its distant medal hopes.
The Kiwis would probably have to beat either Japan or the United States, in addition to Italy, to make the medal round.
With three opponents left to play in round-robin play, including contenders Australia and China, Cuba (0-4) is essentially eliminated from medal contention.
