Festival Offerings Run the Gamut
An eclectic mix of musicians will entertain this weekend at the second annual Valley Glen Festival, which will raise money for community programs and scholarships.
Among those expected to give free performances are flamenco guitarist Bruce Wall, Celtic band Finn MacCool, jazz saxophonist Graham Dorsey, punk band The Dickies, bluegrass band the McPossums and the Grant Festival Chorus of Southern California, composed of Grant High School students, college students and adults.
Children’s entertainment including storytelling, sing-alongs, face-painting and a free petting zoo are also planned, said Brad Luton, president of the Valley Glen Business Assn., the event sponsor.
Proceeds from arts and crafts booths, food sales and such paid activities as rock climbing and pony rides will go toward graffiti abatement in Valley Glen and college scholarships for Grant High School students.
The community association recently awarded $1,000 to Marie Chingren and $750 to Vivian Verba, money that was donated from the association’s 15 members.
“This year’s event is quite a step up from last year, which broke even,” Luton said. “We’ve had a whole year to prepare. We’ve increased the number of vendors and enlarged the entertainment area.”
The event will run 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m Sunday at Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave. Admission and parking are free.
