A man in an 18-wheeler stolen from a Swift trucking yard in Fontana led California Highway Patrol officers on a 45-minute chase Thursday night, before surrendering near El Sereno, authorities said.

A security guard at the trucking yard saw the truck being taken and tailed the big rig, relaying his location to authorities as the chase led onto the San Bernardino Freeway shortly before 9 p.m., said CHP Officer Rosa Ray.

The truck reportedly contained Hitachi televisions with 43-inch screens.

CHP officers in patrol cars and law enforcement officers in at least one helicopter kept tabs on the chase at the big rig moved to the 210 Freeway and the 605 Freeway, before returning to Interstate 10, headed west.

The thief behind the wheel exited the freeway in Alhambra, stopped for a while, then took off again.

Minutes later, he stopped on Valley Boulevard at a railroad crossing at Marianna Avenue, got out of the cab, walked a few feet, then lay face down on the pavement as officers moved in to handcuff him.

The driver’s name was withheld pending booking. No accidents were reported.
